Pediatric Services
Dedicated Children's ER
The pediatric emergency room at CJW Medical Center's Chippenham Campus is staffed 24 hours a day by a board-certified pediatrician and emergency nurses who have received special pediatric training.
One of its rooms is used exclusively to diagnose and treat children with life-threatening illnesses or injuries. This room has child-sized oxygen masks, IV medications tailored to children, monitors that are pre-tuned to pediatric vital signs, and other features that can be important when quick and decisive action is needed.
We also have an orthopedic room with specialized casting and splinting capabilities and an adolescent room designed to meet the needs of patients who require gynecologic or other examinations.
EMS Squads and Pediatric Critical Care Transport
We work in partnership with the family physicians of all our emergency patients, communicating with them as appropriate.
We also have a close relationship with area EMS (emergency medical service) squads, and in fact teach EMS personnel about pediatric emergency diagnosis and treatment.
When needed, we can offer the services of a Pediatric Critical Care Transport. This specially-equipped children's ambulance is standing by to handle the most serious emergencies in which a pediatric patient needs to be moved from one location to another.
Pediatric Unit
Our Chippenham Campus has a unit dedicated solely to pediatric patients.
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
When your child is injured or ill, we know you want to be with him or her as much as possible. To that end, we'll make sure you have as much time as you need to be assured of your child's well-being. Our PICU lets us give critically ill kids or those requiring close observation the specialized care their conditions require.
Pediatric Heart Care & Services
Children and infants with heart conditions have access to the outstanding clinical resources of the Levinson Heart Hospital, named Virginia's #1 Heart Hospital for 3 years in a row by HealthGrades. Our Chippenham Campus has a unit dedicated solely to pediatric patients while our PICU, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and NICU, Newborn Intensive Care Unit, is staffed by specially trained nurses and physicians. We have child-sized medical equipment to cater to our smallest patients and a support network for both parents and children to guide you through this emotionally difficult process.
Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Our NICUs, available on both campuses, are staffed by specially trained nurses and neonatologists, and have 24-hour ventilator capability, monitoring and surgical support. They provide experienced care for our smallest, most critical patients - and encouragement for their parents.
